Slideshow: Local bands come together for Steve Guzman at Detroit Bar

August 31st, 2012, 3:52 pm by

Local artists including Honeypie, the New Limb, the Devious Means, the Ultimate Bearhug (pictured above), Stacy Clark, Jameson and more came together for a benefit for Steve Guzman on Thursday night at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa.

Guzman, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2005, suffered a seizure in May which caused him to total his vehicle on the freeway. Without medical insurance the bills totaled just over $10,000. Honeypie vocalist Trisha Smith organized the benefit since Guzman has done so much in community with his non-profit Turkey and Friends. Music News: Local bands come together for Steve Guzman

July 31st, 2012, 9:08 pm by

Steve Guzman has been a longtime friend of the local music community and has put together numerous benefit shows to help others through his Turkey & Friends non-profit organization, which was started in 2005 when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Since then, Guzman has been fortunate enough to not experience too many side effects. On May 14 however, he suffered a MS-related seizure while driving home from the first day of his new job. Guzman lost consciousness and control of his car, hitting a wall on the side of the freeway.

As a result his car was totaled and he ultimately lost his new job since he would need time to recover from the accident and the seizure. Without medical insurance, Guzman has been strapped with over $10,000 in medical expenses.

When Trisha Smith of local folk outfit Honeypie heard this news, she began organizing a show with some of the artists that have played Guzman’s past benefits, which have raised funds for charities like the MS Foundation and the American Cancer Society.

“He’s always done these benefits for everyone else and I thought we should all really help him out,” Smith says. “I think everyone I asked to do it said yes.”

The “Come Together” benefit show will take place at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa and feature acoustic performances by the New Limb, Jameson, Micah Brown, Honeypie, the Devious Means, the Ultimate Bearhug, Denny White, Carly Layne, Golden Afternoon Ladymonster and  Single Girl, Married Girl.

A minimum donation of $5 will be collected at the door and is 21-and-up.

Slideshow: The Ultimate Bearhug shines at Gogobot launch party

May 24th, 2012, 11:33 am by

Local music fans turned out for travel network Gogobot’s Orange County launch party at Memphis at the Santora on Wednesday night which happened to coincide with Dave Mau‘s twice-a-month Dinner with Dave event at the downtown Santa Ana eatery.

Click here to see a photo slideshow from the Gogobot launch party.

Along with the free grub, courtesy of Mau, Gogobot gave out swag and hosted a photo booth for those in attendance. Local folk duo the Ultimate Bearhug preformed a short-but-sweet set as well though it was tough to hear some of the softer tracks over the casual bar chatter.

Vocalist Doll Knight sang beautifully through tracks off of Bearhug’s latest release, Just South of Los Angeles, as guitarist Barrett Johnson played and sang along and the album’s producer, Dallas Kruse, played keys and accordion.

“Paper Plane” is an absolute treat as Knight coos effortlessly and in “Foolish Things” she assertively slips in a well-placed expletive that definitely caught this crowd’s attention.

Orange Pop: Ultimate Bearhug releases full-length debut this weekend at Hotel Cafe

April 26th, 2012, 7:01 am by

For Orange County-based duo Barrett Johnson and Doll Knight, better known as the folk act the Ultimate Bearhug, the recording of their debut full-length was truly a labor of love.

“It does feel like the longest relationship I’ve ever had in my life,” says Knight, a 21-year-old who is now as highly regarded in local circles for her sweet, songbird vocals as Johnson is for his songwriting.

Their album, Just South of Los Angeles, officially arrives Saturday during the pair’s release party at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles. It was produced by Dallas Kruse, owner and mastermind of Zion Studios in Santa Ana, who also plays accordion, mandolin and Hammond organ on several of the tracks.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that these songs are going to be out,” Kruse says of the new set. “I’m a huge fan of not only Doll’s voice, because I think she’s a supreme talent, but the songs. I think lyrically and melodically, it’s such a great feel-good album, and an album to fall in love to and in love with. It’s great how everything came together, and now it’s on to the next step- we’ve got to go out and get people to know that there’s a record.”
