Music News: No Doubt plans six-night L.A. stand for fall

September 4th, 2012, 5:14 pm by

Savvy fans of Gwen Stefani and the gang who regularly check their website have already taken notice: With no fanfare to hail it, No Doubt quietly posted late on Labor Day that the band has planned a six-show stand at Gibson Amphitheatre, launching just after Thanksgiving.

It will be the group’s first series of shows in Southern California following the Sept. 25 release of Push and Shove, ND’s eagerly awaited new album, its first in more than a decade, since 2001′s Rock Steady.

The gigs occur ever other night across a two-week period: Nov. 24, 26, 28 and 30, then Dec. 2 and 4. Watch the minute-long clip above for the announcement, complete with canned cheers and laughter. (Or was there an audience watching? I can’t quite tell.)

That timing also helps rule out at least one weekend (Dec. 1-2) that KROQ might have held its annual Almost Acoustic Christmas. Dec. 8-9 seems the likeliest candidate, unless having it begin on the first night of Hanukkah leads the radio station to pick Dec. 15-16 instead, though that would be later than usual.

Wouldn’t surprise me if No Doubt turns up at AAC as well. But about these coming Gibson shows: There’s not yet a public on-sale date, but the band is promising that the “best seats in the house” will be sold exclusively through their ND2012 Club pre-sale, which starts Thursday, Sept. 6, at 4 p.m. and ends Monday at 4 p.m.

Members may purchase tickets for one or more of the shows, as many as they wish, during that stretch for an all-inclusive rate of $115 per ticket, with a four-ticket limit per show. Both reserved seats and pit access will be available. Additionally, the pre-sale package scores you early entry into the venue and a commemorative pin and postcard set.

Some details worth noting: All ND2012 Club tickets are nontransferable and must be picked up the night of the show at the designated club entrance. You must present a valid photo ID that matches your will call name and have all guests present, as your party must immediately enter the venue upon ticket pick-up … thus fending off anyone thinking about scalping the ticket for a higher price.

Read more about the pre-sale and how to become a fan club member here.

My guess is that remaining tickets will go on sale next weekend, either Sept. 14 or 15. Stay tuned for more.

Music News: No Doubt, Green Day top all-star lineup for next iHeartRadio Music Festival

July 9th, 2012, 4:09 pm by

We already knew the dates of the next iHeartRadio Music Festival, Sept. 21-22 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. But there obviously wasn’t much reason to get excited until the lineup was revealed.

Now it’s out, and it’s strong enough to start looking into hotel rates for that weekend.

No Doubt will perform during the first night, just days before the O.C.-spawned group finally releases its first album in more than a decade, Push and Shove, on Sept. 25. (The disc’s lead single, “Settle Down,” arrives July 16.)

Green Day, which will launch its ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré! trilogy with the first of those titles the same day Gwen Stefani & Co. return to stores, also will appear during the first half of the iHeart Radio Fest.

More names for that all-A-list bash include mega-stars from country (Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert), rap (Lil Wayne), R&B (Rihanna, Usher), Latin pop (Shakira) and electronic dance music (the spectacle that is Swedish House Mafia).

Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Linkin Park, Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift and Mary J. Blige have been tapped for the Saturday portion of the event, along with Pink (whose sixth studio album, The Truth About Love, is due Sept. 18), Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull and two more giants of the EDM scene, Calvin Harris and Deadmau5.

Tickets go on sale Saturday, July 14, at 10 a.m., with prices starting at $71.25 and rising to a whopping $633. Act fast — last year’s festival sold out in minutes.

Music News: No Doubt premieres the first of a series of behind-the-scenes webisodes

May 8th, 2012, 8:39 am by

Following the official announcement of the release date (Sept. 25) of it’s yet-to-be-titled sixth studio album via YouTube yesterday, No Doubt put up its very first behind-the-scenes webisode of the band recording and tracking the song “Push & Shove” (check it out in the clip below).

The band has been teasing fans via various social networking sites as it has recorded the album in a Santa Monica studio over the last few years. On March 14 the band celebrated its 25th anniversary and vocalist Gwen Stefani tweeted that she was spending the career milestone with the guys – Adrian Young, Tony Kanal and Tom Dumont – working on the new album.

Slideshow: Highlights from KROQ’s annual Weenie Roasts

April 26th, 2012, 6:41 pm by

With KROQ 106.7 FM’s sold-out 20th Annual Weenie Roast y Fiesta happening on May 5 – featuring headliners Coldplay, Incubus, the Offspring, Silversun Pickups and Garbage at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater – we decided to take a look back at past Weenie fests. Check out what I thought of the 2011 Weenie Roast with surprise guest the Foo Fighters here.

Click here for a photo slideshow of past KROQ Weenie Roasts.

The multi-artist rock concert has been presented annually since 1993 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, formerly known as Irvine Meadows, with the exception of 2000, when it was held at Angel Stadium in Anaheim and featured No Doubt, Korn, Ozzy Osbourne, the Offspring, Creed, Moby, Stone Temple Pilots, Third Eye Blind, Lit and more.

The inaugural event took place on June 12, 1993 and featured Terence Trent D’Arby, Dramarama, Gin Blossoms, the Lemonheads, the Posies, Rocket from the Crypt, X and Stone Temple Pilots.

Of all the artists to have played Weenie Roast, Stone Temple Pilots, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Religion and Tim Armstrong, whether solo, with Rancid or the Transplants, have performed most frequently through the years.

Take a spin through our slideshow to see many of the acts that have performed – some memorable, others may have you asking, “What happened to that dude/band/white rapper?”

Slideshow: 25 years and there’s still No Doubt

March 26th, 2012, 2:49 pm by

On March 14, 1987 the Anaheim-based ska-rock band No Doubt performed its first official live show at Fender’s Ballroom in Long Beach as one of a dozen or so acts opening up for the Untouchables. The group, which was formed in 1986 by keys player Eric Stefani, lead vocalist John Spence and included a baby-faced Gwen Stefani on back-up vocals, had played multiple house parties, but this occasion was truly the birth of No Doubt.

Take a spin through our photo slideshow to see some of the highlights of No Doubt’s 25-year career.

In December of that same year, Spence committed suicide in an Anaheim park and the group disbanded. By that spring, however, it got back together with Alan Meade (currently of local ska act Starpool) as lead vocalist. Meade left the group shortly after and Gwen stepped into the spotlight. Members came and went, including Gwen’s big brother Eric, who went on to pursue a career as an animator for “The Simpsons.” In the end it was Stefani, her former flame and bassist Tony Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont, drummer Adrian Young as well as the band’s horn players, trombonist Gabrial McNair and trumpet and keys player Stephen Bradley.

What will the Coachella lineup bring?

January 9th, 2012, 3:05 pm by

For a moment it seemed like it was going to happen early this morning, and longtime Coachellans know it can arrive with no notice. This post could very well be followed by one announcing the real deal.

But here we are still waiting with bated breath for some of our Coachella questions to be answered this week.

Has No Doubt really fallen off the bill? Were they ever really on? How did Goldenvoice manage to fill two weekends with the same roster of talent? Or did they? If so, how close did they come to matching lineups?

And what of the rumor that Black Sabbath would close one night – a questionable decision even for this eclectic event – now that Tony Iommi is in the early stages of lymphoma?

Read more about Coachella line-up possibilities on the Orange County Register’s Soundcheck blog.
