Review: Alkaline Trio, Against Me! finish off Musink festival with rousing sets

March 5th, 2012, 12:28 pm by

As the annual three-day Musink Tattoo Convention & Music Festival came to a close Sunday night, dozens of patrons hurried to get in their final appointments with what few world-renowned artists remained on site.

Numerous shops had packed up by late afternoon, but the frenzy of humming tattoo guns was still at full blast in the convention hangar. Some were simply getting final touches put on; others, like a young woman from Long Beach who had spent most of Saturday getting only the outline done from her ankle to her hip, were just getting started by the time the sun went down.

The music hangar seemed light, maybe only a quarter-full, for blink-and-you-missed-’em sets by L.A.-based rockers the Darlings and O.C. act Hell or Highwater, the new project from Atreyu anchor Brandon Saller. But the place filled in quickly for Against Me!’s performance. Dedicated fans roared along with fists high in the air as the Florida quartet put its all into “Pints of Guinness Make You Strong” and “White People for Peace,” the first single off 2007 Butch Vig-produced breakthrough, New Wave.

Review: Musink fans get crazy for Yellowcard, New Found Glory

March 4th, 2012, 3:04 pm by

After Friday’s successful psychobilly kickoff featuring the Howlers, Guana Batz and Tiger Army, the second night of the 5th annual Musink Tattoo Convention & Music Festival, Saturday at OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, had concert-goers in sardine-like conditions in anticipation of pop-punk groups New Found Glory, Yellowcard and Bayside.

Ahead of schedule, NFG wasted no time with its set, diving head first into “Understatement” off 2002′s Sticks and Stones. The eager crowd grew massive within seconds and consumed the entire front section of the concert hangar. Lead singer Jordan Pundik’s wild cardio work and untamed antics during “At Least I’m Known for Something” and “All Down Hill from Here” (from 20004′s Catalyst) inspired a pogo-ing circle-pit frenzy among the faithful, whose intensity impressed even those admiring from a safe distance.

Live Review: Tiger Army roars at Musink kickoff

March 3rd, 2012, 12:26 pm by

What a difference a voice makes. Having a great bunch of songs helps, too.

Tiger Army may share a psychobilly sound with the Howlers and the legendary Guana Batz, the two acts that opened for the group Friday night at the launch of the annual Musink tattoo and music convention at the OC Fair & Events Center. But there is little doubt who owned the musical side of things during this first of three festival days in Costa Mesa.

Armed with a vocalist who likely would have been a success no matter what genre he fell in love with, plus a selection of tunes ranging from blistering punk to pumped-up rockabilly and plenty of country- and blues-tinged stuff, the NorCal-bred, SoCal-based trio — singer-guitarist Nick 13, stand-up bassist Geoff Kresge and drummer James Meza — celebrated their craft with every moment of their 90-minute set.

Mixing several early favorites from their self-titled 1999 debut (notably the hard-driving “True Romance,” rockabilly romp “Devil Girl” and night-ending “Last Night”) with more recent material, Tiger Army turned a dark and cold hangar into a bright and jubilant hootenanny.

Congrats to Lonni of Riverside for her prize-winning body art.

Lonni scored two 3-day VIP  passes to the 5th Annual Musink Tattoo Convention & Music Festival March 2-4 at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa.

Her tattoo, she says, she got to honor her love of Disneyland and the Haunted Mansion in a way that “wasn’t too obvious.”

Musink becomes cultural O.C. staple

February 29th, 2012, 2:27 pm by

Now in its fifth year, the Musink Tattoo Convention & Music Festival returns to the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa this weekend, March 2-4. With body art as deeply embedded into Californian culture as rock ’n’ roll, the annual fest, which began in 2008 with a big push from “L.A. Ink” star Kat Von D, has become wildly popular among music fans and musicians who are also tattoo and piercing enthusiasts.

This year’s three-day event boasts hundreds of artists who will be tattooing on-site as well as performances by Tiger Army, the Howlers and Guana Batz on Friday, New Found Glory with Yellowcard and Bayside on Saturday, and Alkaline Trio, Against Me!, Hell or Highwater and the Darlings on Sunday.

Nick 13, vocalist and guitarist for L.A. psychobilly trio Tiger Army (powered by bassist Geoff Kresge and Fullerton-based drummer James Meza), says that performing at Musink is a natural fit for his band, which also appeared at the inaugural fest.

“Everyone in the band is into tattoos and has been for some time, and our fans are as well,” he said during a recent phone interview. “There are hundreds if not possibly thousands of Tiger Army tattoos around the world that either feature lyrics or the ‘Tiger Bat’ logo, so I think it’s a very cool thing.”

Slideshow: Musink tattoo portraits

February 27th, 2012, 4:48 pm by

For the last two years, Orange County Register photographer Leonard Ortiz and I have set up camp on the first day of the annual three-day Musink Tattoo Convention & Music Festival at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa to shoot tattoo portraits of Musink patrons.

We’ve met dozens of interesting characters, each with a story to tell about the ink they’ve had permanently etched onto their skin. Take a spin through our portraits slideshow from Musink 2010 and 2011.

If you have awesome body art that you’d like to show off in one of our portraits, we will be onsite again this year in a small photo booth area located in between the concert hangar and tattoo convention hangar on Friday, March 2. Stop by and say “Hello!”

We’re even giving one lucky reader the chance to win two three-day VIP passes to Musink on March 2-4 here.

This year’s event features hundreds of tattoo artists from around the globe, skate and BMX demos and live music each evening.  Southern California-based rockabilly trio Tiger Army (pictured) will headline on Friday night along with Guanabatz and Howlers, New Found Glory, Yellowcard and Bayside will be featured on Saturday and Alkaline Trio, Against Me!, Hell or Highwater and the Darlings will close out the event on Sunday.
