Review: Iron Maiden roars into Irvine

August 10th, 2012, 1:44 pm by

As thousands filed into the first of two Iron Maiden shows at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine this week, one old-school fan – who admitted to his buddy he hadn’t seen the band since the late ’80s – inquired: “I wonder if Bruce Dickinson can still sing like he used to?”

He got his answer quickly Thursday night, as the fearless frontman, sounding sharp as ever, stepped on stage and the band eased into the set a bit with “Moonchild,” the first track off its 1988 release “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.”

The British metal gods’ 34-date Maiden England North American tour, which continued Friday, is loosely based on its original outing behind that album. Numerous selections from the disc, including “Can I Play with Madness,” “The Evil That Men Do,” “The Clairvoyant” and the title track, were featured among a stellar set list of favorites.

Primarily sticking with songs from the ’80s, the band did dip into the early ’90s with “Fear of the Dark” and “Afraid to Shoot Strangers,” which Dickinson told the crowd they were playing “because we can, really, and we like it.” It was the only song of the night for which he gave any sort of introduction, noting that it was about a soldier – who might be a good or bad guy – and what goes through his head as he has to shoot at strangers. At the end of the day, the vocalist pointed out, he probably just wants to come out of it alive. Seems as fitting today as ever.

Dickinson didn’t offer many more asides other than a few humble words of thanks and his signature cry: “Scream for me, Irvine!” That request was filled numerous times as this loyal crowd, most of which donned old tour T-shirts – many of them older than the young fans on hand – gladly obliged to the singer’s plea for screams. They roared along to choruses, turning red in the face and thrusting fists high into the air.

Slideshow: Cinderella, Sebastian Bach bring out the metalheads at Pacific

August 5th, 2012, 8:42 am by

Some concerts are all about the party. That was clear long before headliner Cinderella or opening act Sebastian Bach took the stage at Pacific Amphitheatre Friday night. Concert-goers, many wielding the biggest brews available, were mostly interested in chatting, snapping images of each other, texting pals on their cell phones or checking out the ’80s Sunset Strip attire of guys and gals who never saw Nirvana and Pearl Jam coming.

Against that summer-shindig backdrop, both Bach and Cinderella had the deck stacked in their favor.

Bach (real late name: Blerk) sang for Skid Row in the late ’80s and early ’90s before embarking on his solo career. Yet, despite an energetic effort to bring his best musical game to Costa Mesa, his rutted vocals marred the majority of his 45-minute set.

Slideshow: Rammstein blazes through Anaheim

May 18th, 2012, 1:11 pm by

It’s funny: Based on the standard reaction I get from almost everyone to whom I mention German industrial metal band Rammstein – mostly a few rapid chants of the outfit’s lone stateside (kinda) hit, 1997′s “Du Hast” – you’d think the sextet’s popularity petered out before the turn of the millennium.

Click here for a photo slideshow of Rammstein’s performance.

Yet, given the massive American audiences the group has attracted while touring behind the retrospective Made in Germany 1995-2011 – including the diverse throng that turned out for a crushing coup at Honda Center on Thursday, a year after a Forum blast that marked Rammstein’s first Southern California appearance in a decade – it’s clear there’s still plenty of fuel behind this fire.

Fuel and fire were undoubtedly keywords for this Anaheim gig: the band’s vocalist, Till Lindemann, is a licensed pyrotechnics expert, so some sort of explosion or fiery stunt permeated nearly every song on the set list.
