Interview: Amy Schumer roasts Roseanne, heads to Irvine

August 9th, 2012, 2:38 pm by

Getting made fun of is a regular occurrence for comedian Amy Schumer. So when she was asked to do her second Comedy Central roast, this time to burn Roseanne Barr, she jumped at the chance.

She had survived jabs thrown at her during a similar roast of Charlie Sheen last September by a panel that included Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, William Shatner, Mike Tyson, Jackass personality Steve-O, Jeffrey Ross and the late Patrice O’Neal on the dais. She was sure she could handle Katey Sagal, Carrie Fisher, Ellen Barkin and Jane Lynch.

“It’s really an honor,” Schumer says of the roast, shot last weekend at the Hollywood Palladium. “After doing the first one I was like, ‘Oh God, what are they going to say about me?’ or ‘What do people see when they look at me?’ I know my own insecurities, but what are these new sets of insecurities people are going to hand me?

“Then you realize that it’s not really personal. You just try to craft a good joke, and honestly it was a lot of fun. Nothing hurt my feelings and it was really a special night for me, especially being with all of those female comics.”

Amy Schumer performs at 8 and 10 Friday and 7 and 9 Saturday at the Irvine Improv, 71 Fortune Drive, $20.

Interview: Iron Maiden ready to melt faces in Irvine

August 7th, 2012, 10:14 am by
Almost 37 years into his career as bassist and principle songwriter for Iron Maiden, Steve Harris still gets a kick out of the young, fresh faces he sees that still pop up during the heavy metal band’s massive world tours.

Now out on a 34-date North American leg of its Maiden England Tour, designed to closely mirror the U.K. band’s 1988 outing behind Seventh Son of a Seventh Son in both look and song selections, Harris says during a recent phone interview that it’s pretty scary how so much of the crowd, not yet born when the majority of Maiden’s classic material was recorded, nonetheless sing along to every single word of key tracks from crucially influential albums like The Number of the Beast (1982), Piece of Mind (1983) and the legendary Long Beach recording Live After Death (1985).

“They’ve definitely done their homework,” Harris says, with a slight laugh, of newer Maidenheads.

The Maiden England production, which arrives this week for two shows (Thursday and Friday) at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, boasts cuts culled almost exclusively from the group’s ’80s prime – although given the massive audiences that are annually roused worldwide by vocalist Bruce Dickinson and the rest of the sextet, its heyday is arguably ongoing.

In addition to required elements from Seventh Son (1988), the band’s sets include several pieces from Powerslave (1984) and Somewhere in Time (1986)” and key tracks from the earlier staples – even a couple off the band’s 1980 self-titled debut, when Paul Di’Anno was briefly frontman. (Dickinson, a far more agile and sky-scraping singer, replaced him after 1981’s Killers.)

“We haven’t changed the arrangements or anything like that,” Harris assures. “The songs still stand up as being strong as they are, so we’re not changing them. We got a few different things we didn’t play – quite a few things that we didn’t play – back on the ‘88 tour to mix it up a bit and keep it more interesting for us, and the audience probably.”

Iron Maiden plays Aug. 9-10 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, 8808 Irvine Center Drive, in Irvine. Coheed and Cambria are up first at 7:30 each night. Tickets are $40-$160.

Music News: Local bands come together for Steve Guzman

July 31st, 2012, 9:08 pm by

Steve Guzman has been a longtime friend of the local music community and has put together numerous benefit shows to help others through his Turkey & Friends non-profit organization, which was started in 2005 when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Since then, Guzman has been fortunate enough to not experience too many side effects. On May 14 however, he suffered a MS-related seizure while driving home from the first day of his new job. Guzman lost consciousness and control of his car, hitting a wall on the side of the freeway.

As a result his car was totaled and he ultimately lost his new job since he would need time to recover from the accident and the seizure. Without medical insurance, Guzman has been strapped with over $10,000 in medical expenses.

When Trisha Smith of local folk outfit Honeypie heard this news, she began organizing a show with some of the artists that have played Guzman’s past benefits, which have raised funds for charities like the MS Foundation and the American Cancer Society.

“He’s always done these benefits for everyone else and I thought we should all really help him out,” Smith says. “I think everyone I asked to do it said yes.”

The “Come Together” benefit show will take place at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa and feature acoustic performances by the New Limb, Jameson, Micah Brown, Honeypie, the Devious Means, the Ultimate Bearhug, Denny White, Carly Layne, Golden Afternoon Ladymonster and  Single Girl, Married Girl.

A minimum donation of $5 will be collected at the door and is 21-and-up.

Slideshow: Adam Lambert thrills fans at Pacific

July 20th, 2012, 12:30 pm by

Extremely popular American Idol contestants have made a major showing during Pacific Amphitheatre‘s concert series this week. First up was 2011 winner Scotty McCreery on Wednesday; Season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert followed Thursday.

Over the past few weeks, the latter singer has popped up in entertainment news reports on a regular basis. He had the rare distinction of serving as Queen’s frontman during a half-dozen European dates and got rave reviews in London. The YouTube clips are so good, the band should team up with Lambert again in America sometime soon.

He’s also among the rumored replacements for departing Idol judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez – a far better proposal than Mariah Carey – and he will have a cameo role on the ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars in October.

This past spring, the San Diego native’s sophomore album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The infectious songs are more dance-oriented this time around, with contributions from Pharrell Williams, Bruno Mars, Chic’s Nile Rodgers, Sam Sparro and others. Lambert co-wrote all but one of the tracks, which he describes as “more honest and self-aware. It paints a clearer picture of who I am.”

Inside Pacific Amphitheatre, many devoted fans (or “Glamberts”) dressed in black-and-yellow striped attire, just like the artwork that adorns the latest album, Trespassing. Some even waved homemade cardboard signs and cutouts. One middle-aged woman and two teenage girls all wore matching blue hair extensions.

Music News: Friends, fans to remember Christian Dasilva with benefit show featuring the Aquabats

July 19th, 2012, 12:35 pm by

UPDATE: A fund has been set up per Christian Dasilva’s father which will benefit all three of the children. Those wishing to donate can do so by sending checks payable to Tony Dasilva at Pacific Western Bank 1661 Rosecrans Street, San Diego, CA. 92106.

Sad and tragic news spread quickly on social networking sites Monday afternoon: Christian Dasilva (pictured above, right), known by many as the sound guy at all-ages concert venue Chain Reaction in Anaheim, died after his motorcycle collided with a Lexus sedan on Hamilton Avenue in Huntington Beach, where he lived.

The outpouring of condolences for the 40-year-old’s new and pregnant wife Emma and his two daughters, Caidyn and Chloe, has continued all week. Dasilva, who worked at Chain Reaction for more than a dozen years, manned the sound booth and mixed shows for thousands of artists, many of whom posted about their experiences with him on Facebook.

Here’s one such post, from a member of pop-punk act the Ataris, regulars at Chain over the years: “I just found out the terrible news that our good friend Christian Dasilva passed away yesterday. Completely bummed. What a genuinely good dude. I just want to send my thoughts and prayers out to his family and friends. You were a great friend man. You will be missed. Stay gold brother.”

Former Chain Reaction talent buyer and current Glass House operator Jon Halperin, friends with Dasilva for many years before working with him at Chain beginning in 2000, has quickly helped organize a benefit show to help cover funeral costs. Dubbed “Christian Dasilva Has a Posse,” the charity memorial on Monday will feature O.C. ska and rock act the Aquabats along with local band Starpool. Tickets are $20, with all proceeds going straight to the Dasilva family.

Tickets for the new gig, $39.50-$59.50, go on sale Friday, July 20, at 10 a.m. Just a reminder that the Black Keys also play Oct. 2 at Santa Barbara Bowl, Oct. 4 at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego and Oct. 8 at Honda Center in Anaheim. Opening act throughout the run: Tegan and Sara.
