I wouldn’t be at all surprised to wake up Tuesday morning to an announcement telling me this gig goes on sale just before Easter — or maybe because of the holiday it won’t become official until next week. (Not a lot of shows tend to go on sale this time of year, though such concert-biz habits are just as easily disregarded.)
In any case, until the Ticketmaster page is built, let’s just say it’s highly probable that Duran Duran will return to Pacific Amphitheatre this year, helping to close out the venue’s final weekend on Aug. 11.
Ever-reliable Pollstar indicates as much in its post about the band’s recently announced spring-int0-summer tour of South America, Europe and the U.S. Plenty of online fan havens, like this one, also list a “Costa Mesa, venue tba” play on that date.
Unless Nick, Simon, John and Roger are planning a surprise visit to Detroit Bar — stop salivating at the thought, Durannies, ain’t gonna happen — that unnamed venue has to be Pacific, where the enduring MTV O.G.’s last played in 2009. It’s also the spot where in July 2003 the original lineup (which deserves Hall of Fame induction sooner than later) made its first major appearance since Live Aid nearly 20 years earlier.
So the place perhaps has more meaning for the band (still without guitarist Andy Taylor) than, say, Nokia Theatre, where Duran played last September after a particularly impressive, legacy-worthy turn at Coachella and a star-studded appearance at the Mayan.
Regardless, it would be a standout choice among the mainstays and ‘tween talents clogging Pacific’s schedule so far. When it becomes an inevitable reality, we’ll add updated info on prices and on-sale times.
