Some of these gigs, chiefly a chunk of the classic rock stuff at the Greek, we already knew: In the past couple weeks, everything from the triptych of REO Speedwagon, Styx and Ted Nugent and the supergroup Chickenfoot to the nearly annual return of Ringo’s All-Starr Band had all announced stops as part of their summer itineraries.
We also just learned this week about Neil Diamond’s stand at the Greek in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Hot August Night. Tellingly, it’s listed on this year’s Premiere Marquee Club roster as “August TBA” – further indication that the two dates going on sale Monday, Aug. 11 and 16, surely won’t be the only ones he plays.
But there are more than three dozen other shows revealed in today’s announcement that are now available through membership to the PMC, a joint venture between the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park and Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk.
There are, of course, a number of repeat bookings.
Sugarland is back for the third season in a row, headlining the Greek on May 22. Furthur, featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir flying the Grateful Dead flag, is becoming an October institution at the venue, this time slated for Oct. 5-6. Soul legend Al Green returns there July 19, trumpeter Chris Botti on June 2.
Gibson, too, has a handful of usual suspects, primarily from Latin music: Conjunto Primavera on June 23, Jenni Rivera on Sept. 7, Marco Antonio Solis on Sept. 22, Vicente Fernandez on Nov. 9-10. (Undoubtedly there will be additional dates from the Mexican folk hero by the time fall arrives.)
Yet just as expected – if not so easy to predict – are a variety of match-ups and multi-act bills you might not find anywhere else, starting with the Greek’s season opener, a Cinco de Mayo festival headlined by Los Lobos and featuring Neko Case, Alejandro Escovedo, L.A. punk legends X and Mariachi El Bronx.
Other appealing teamings at the Greek include the return of Bonnie Raitt, touring behind her first album in seven years (Slipstream), with support from gospel great Mavis Staples, Sept. 22; the B-52’s and Squeeze, a pairing that should have happened years ago, on June 30; blues guitarists Buddy Guy and Jonny Lang on Aug. 7; endearing breeze-pop star Colbie Caillat (pictured) with future Dancing with the Stars contestant Gavin DeGraw on Aug. 19; and a sure-to-be-nutty night that finds Fishbone opening for Primus on June 8.
Then there are a couple ’90s nostalgia packages. At the Greek on June 29, Everclear, Gin Blossoms, Marcy Playground and two of O.C.’s more enduring bands, Sugar Ray and Lit, gather under the banner Summerland. Gibson, meanwhile, brings together Barenaked Ladies, Blues Traveler, Big Head Todd & the Monsters and Cracker on July 27.
The complete list of events is below. What’d you say? Looks kinda samey to you? Yeah, well, don’t forget that this is far from everything both locations will host this year. PMC members find out about fresh bookings first and get access to priority-seating offers, as well as exclusive discounts and amenities.
Whether aiming to score choice seats for more indie-chic stuff like Regina Spektor on Aug. 14 (hmmm, notice that’s in the middle of Diamond’s dates) or angling to get a jump on whatever extra nights of singing along to “Sweet Caroline” may still come, it would behoove you to become a member. Buy tickets to three shows to do so, from now until March 24.
There are no membership fees or any forced combinations of shows. Partial payment plans are available. Visit here to join, or call 818-622-9987.
