Musink 3-day VIP pass winning tattoo

February 29th, 2012, 4:09 pm by

Congrats to Lonni of Riverside for her prize-winning body art.

Lonni scored two 3-day VIP  passes to the 5th Annual Musink Tattoo Convention & Music Festival March 2-4 at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa.

Her tattoo, she says, she got to honor her love of Disneyland and the Haunted Mansion in a way that “wasn’t too obvious.”

Review: 311 packs a punch in Anaheim

February 29th, 2012, 3:39 pm by

Returning to Southern California for the kickoff of its annual Spring tour (leading up to 311 Day 2012, slated for March 10-11 in Las Vegas), 311 performed to a formidably full house on Tuesday night at City National Grove of Anaheim.

As usual, the Nebraska-based outfit rocked, rapped, danced and jammed through a set of hits spanning its 20-plus-year career. “Full Ride,” “Freeze Time” and “All Mixed Up” served as invigorating openers for the throngs of old-school fans that likewise bolstered the show’s launch by unabashedly belting out every lyric.

The newer tracks that cropped up mid-set – including “Timebomb,” “Wild Nights” and “Something Out of Nothing” – were less impressive. The bulk of their riffs and vocal harmonies, performed by vocalists Nick Hexum and SA Martinez, resounded like unremarkable rehashes of the group’s early sound.

Yet it wasn’t just the repetitive nature of those tunes that proved problematic. For whatever reason, Hexum and Martinez sounded uncomfortably off-key when they harmonized, killing momentum in otherwise powerhouse picks (“Uncalm” and “Beautiful Disaster”), and similarly marring the fluidity of typically entrancing tunes (“Prisoner” and “Amber”).

Musink becomes cultural O.C. staple

February 29th, 2012, 2:27 pm by

Now in its fifth year, the Musink Tattoo Convention & Music Festival returns to the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa this weekend, March 2-4. With body art as deeply embedded into Californian culture as rock ’n’ roll, the annual fest, which began in 2008 with a big push from “L.A. Ink” star Kat Von D, has become wildly popular among music fans and musicians who are also tattoo and piercing enthusiasts.

This year’s three-day event boasts hundreds of artists who will be tattooing on-site as well as performances by Tiger Army, the Howlers and Guana Batz on Friday, New Found Glory with Yellowcard and Bayside on Saturday, and Alkaline Trio, Against Me!, Hell or Highwater and the Darlings on Sunday.

Nick 13, vocalist and guitarist for L.A. psychobilly trio Tiger Army (powered by bassist Geoff Kresge and Fullerton-based drummer James Meza), says that performing at Musink is a natural fit for his band, which also appeared at the inaugural fest.

“Everyone in the band is into tattoos and has been for some time, and our fans are as well,” he said during a recent phone interview. “There are hundreds if not possibly thousands of Tiger Army tattoos around the world that either feature lyrics or the ‘Tiger Bat’ logo, so I think it’s a very cool thing.”
