Live Review: Polaris at Noon kicks off February residency at Constellation Room

The Constellation Room, located inside of the Observatory in Santa Ana, was filled with dancing fans and upbeat music Monday night. O.C.-based electronic act Polaris at Noon, headed up by Jason Suwito, is the February Monday night resident artist and drew in dozens of fans who came out to support the first of the act’s four shows at the venue.

High energy put off by the bands, which included openers Tapioca and the Flea and White Arrows, definitely rubbed off on the audience and the performers seemed to also thrive off of that energy, really putting their all into each set.

Despite being the headlining act, Suwito, along with the musicians that help bring his music to life – keys player Thomas Dumont, guitarist Philippe Gutierrez and drummer Kevin Jordan – decided to perform second to last and let Royal Sons end the evening on a more mellow note.

There was a lot of buzz going on about Tapioca and the Flea since the group recently opened for Irvine-based rock act Young the Giant. As the band took the stage, the audience came to life.

“I was told to check them (Tapioca and the Flea) out by my friend who saw them open for Young the Giant, and so here I am,” frequent concertgoer Kara Stickler, 21, said as the set rolled on.

The hip swinging and head nodding continued on into the second act, White Arrows, and escalated into jumping and dance circles when Polaris at Noon played its set. Suwito and his band are no strangers to playing a local residency. Previous to its gig in the Constellation Room, the band was the resident artist at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa a few months back. Still, Suwito voiced some reservations about playing several consecutive shows in one spot.

“It’s kind of scary playing four weeks in a row,” he says before taking the stage. “You’re kind of just supposed to play one market, go away for a while, and come back.”

With a variety of opening acts each week, which he handpicked himself, and a change in the set list, he is confident that there will be something different each week, he shares. With the release of a new EP, the follow up to “En Pointe” which was released last April, debuting right around Valentine’s Day, Suwito says he’ll be mixing some of the brand new material into the shows as well.
