Interview: James McCartney makes O.C. debut next week

May 25th, 2012, 3:47 pm by

Because the Beatles remain the single most significant force in the history of popular music, it’s no wonder that all things related to the Fab Four continue to fascinate music fans more than four decades after the quartet called it quits.

One of the most intriguing things about that is the reaction when children of John, Paul, George and Ringo perform. The world has long heard from the offspring of Lennon (half-brothers Julian and Sean), Harrison (whose son Dhani records as Thenewno2) and Starr (Zak Starkey, who has drummed for the Who since 1996).

Now comes the steady rise of James McCartney. The only son of Paul and Linda, he had previously been featured on solo albums from his parents (his dad’s 2001 disc Driving Rain, his late mom’s 1998 effort Wide Prairie). But his ambitious two-disc set The Complete EP Collection (from Engine Company Records) marks a proper introduction for the 34-year-old singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in London.

Pulling together previously digital-only efforts Available Light (2010) and Close At Hand (2011), plus five new songs, the combined EP package is an exciting, wide-ranging effort the spans rousing power-pop, experimental material in the tradition of Radiohead, even authentic ’50s rockabilly, yet it all somehow works as a cohesive set. While his music rarely mirrors that of the Beatles — a smart move toward establishing a separate identity — James nonetheless has the same adventuresome spirit still recognized as key to his forebears’ magical imprint.

We caught up with McCartney last week, shortly before his first-ever appearance in Orange County, May 29 at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, followed by a May 31 gig at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood.

Soundcheck: I love your songs — you mix melodic pop-rock, indie, expressive ballads, experimental rock. Could you talk a bit about the diverse approach you take to songwriting, and how that connects with the lyrics or emotions of a specific song?

James McCartney: It’s whatever comes naturally at first, but it’s usually music first, then lyrics. I try different approaches, though, because sometimes you can find something for a song in a way you wouldn’t have thought. Even by singing nonsense words over a melody until things begin to take shape. But in the end it’s about having as much emotion as possible for me, musically and lyrically. Heartfelt and true, cathartic. Natural.

James McCartney plays May 29 at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, 33157 Camino Capistrano. Tickets are $15. Also see him May 31 at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, 9009 W. Sunset Blvd., $12.

Music News: Lightning in a Bottle, Danzig Legacy, James McCartney and more

May 25th, 2012, 10:22 am by

Lightning in a Bottle — It’s more than an electronic dance music festival – yoga workshops, consciousness-raising seminars and a variety of creative pursuits will be just as prevalent throughout Silverado Canyon this coming holiday weekend. But the biggest draw for this annual gathering in O.C.’s nether regions remains the top-quality DJ culture that LIB attracts.

This year’s roster includes previous Coachella stars Bassnectar, the Glitch Mob, Shpongle and Apparat, along with more than two dozen more. Plus, as this is a production of L.A. performance-art troupe the Do Lab, the cirque-style rock and theatrics of the Lucent Dossier Experience will undoubtedly stage some dazzlers.

Click here to see a photo slideshow of Lightning in a Bottle 2011.

General admission tickets are $240 to enter the festival starting today, $185 starting Saturday, $100 for Sunday only. Kids under 12 are free, though everyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Danzig Legacy — Last Halloween at Gibson Amphitheatre, metal maven and horror-punk icon Glenn Danzig made a triple-bill out of himself: one set from his current self-named band, another from his previous group Samhain, and a headlining batch of Misfits classics that reteams him with guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein. Saturday night that same setup returns, this time to play a place three times as large: Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, 8808 Irvine Center Drive. Tickets start at $13.13 for lawn access and top out at $69.50. Show time is 7:15.

Orange Pop: BLOK spices things up

May 24th, 2012, 12:32 pm by

For local musicians Damien Blaise, Jesse St. John and Gianna Gianna, music has become a family business.

The tight-knit sibling trio is behind one of the more unique acts to emerge from behind the Orange Curtain in recent years, taking the local scene by storm with rapid-fire hip-hop lyrics, loud and varied electronic beats, and wild performances. Under the moniker BLOK, they bring it hard on stage, sporting cutting-edge outfits that incorporate vintage, street and high-fashion style, and indulging sporadic movements typically developed in the moment, not rehearsed.

Click here to see more photos of BLOK from our photo shoot.

Since its inception four years ago, BLOK has gone on to headline various local venues and found itself welcomed with open arms. The group’s style doesn’t always fit what’s dominant in the current scene, yet the threesome often winds up appearing on nights heavy on indie rock.

“It’s about bringing those new concepts into areas where those concepts don’t exist,” Blaise explains during a break from a recent photo shoot at the Register. “That’s a big goal of this project – with all of my projects, period – is to bring concepts into something that doesn’t necessarily incorporate that concept typically.”

“When we’re making (music), we don’t necessarily consider the ‘target audience’ or how it will get reacted to,” St. John adds. “We have a vision and we’re excited to express it. We don’t think of it comparatively melding into a certain scene or a certain sound – it’s our art, it’s what we want to express. Anywhere we go, we’re doing something that’s unique to us and organic to us … we don’t fit exactly anywhere.”

Slideshow: The Ultimate Bearhug shines at Gogobot launch party

May 24th, 2012, 11:33 am by

Local music fans turned out for travel network Gogobot’s Orange County launch party at Memphis at the Santora on Wednesday night which happened to coincide with Dave Mau‘s twice-a-month Dinner with Dave event at the downtown Santa Ana eatery.

Click here to see a photo slideshow from the Gogobot launch party.

Along with the free grub, courtesy of Mau, Gogobot gave out swag and hosted a photo booth for those in attendance. Local folk duo the Ultimate Bearhug preformed a short-but-sweet set as well though it was tough to hear some of the softer tracks over the casual bar chatter.

Vocalist Doll Knight sang beautifully through tracks off of Bearhug’s latest release, Just South of Los Angeles, as guitarist Barrett Johnson played and sang along and the album’s producer, Dallas Kruse, played keys and accordion.

“Paper Plane” is an absolute treat as Knight coos effortlessly and in “Foolish Things” she assertively slips in a well-placed expletive that definitely caught this crowd’s attention.
